These are all great reasons to change from non-renewable petroleum based plastics and foam...but is there more? Are there business reasons to “Go Green?†We put on our research caps and went looking. Here is what we found.
The recent survey by Tanberg, “Corporate Environmental Behavior and Impact on Brand Values†states that more than half of global consumers in 15 countries (53 percent/representing 1.1 billion people) prefer to purchase products and services from a company with a strong environmental reputation. In addition, eight in ten workers surveyed globally would prefer to work for an environmentally ethical organization.
There is no denying it. People around the world are concerned about the environment and what we are leaving for future generations. Statistics show that Canadians born from 1977 to 1994 will number 9.2 million by 2011. This group puts heavy emphasis on corporate, social and environmental ethics with half the people surveyed between ages 19 to 29 saying buying green products is important to them. Environmental concern among consumers is considerable and far reaching. Consumers want “Green†options and they are willing to support businesses that offer them.
So what can we do? Where can we make a difference? A 2007 study by Restaurant and Institutions Magazine found that energy usage and takeout packaging are the two areas of biggest concern. The largest percentages of consumers say it is “Very Important†for food service businesses to be “Green†in these areas.
